Former Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel will take over as Ohio’s Lieutenant Governor. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced the decision Monday during a news conference.
JD Vance vacated the position nearly a month ago when he took over as Vice President of the United States.
“Jim Tressel, I trust his judgment. He is a born leader,” DeWine said. “He shares that vision for the future of the state of Ohio, he has the ability to pull people together.”
From FOX 8:
“I appreciate the governor’s nomination of President Tressel who has dedicated his career to guiding our youth on both the gridiron as a coach and in the classroom as a college president,” said Ohio Senate President Rob McColley in a statement. “I look forward to hearing more from Jim Tressel as the Senate carries out its confirmation duties as directed by the Ohio Constitution.”
Tressel will need to be confirmed by the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate before he assumes his new role. The decision could come down as early as this week.
What does a Lieutenant Governor Do?
The lieutenant governor is often first in line of succession to the governorship. He or she also acts as governor when the actual governor leaves the state or becomes unable to fulfill their duties.
Also, the lieutenant governor is often the president of the state senate.
Tressel has not ruled out a bid for the governorship in 2026 when Tressel has fulfilled his duties.
